Nantucket purses were introduced in the mid-twentieth century and became status symbols among the yachting crowd that meandered back and forth between Nantucket Island and the Riviera. Our designs are classic, with tight cane weave, hardwood tops and bottoms, bone or horn knobs and pegs, handcarved bone ornaments and rattan-wrapped leather hinges and closures.

Nantucket Purse with Handcarved Ornament

Two of these purses are ornamented with scrimshaw, a nautical folk art dating back to the nineteenth century. Our scrimshaw is etched and inked by hand on bone using traditional methods. The shell purse ornament is also handcrafted of bone.
